MOTU MIDI Express 128 ($200 new and interfaces with DAW. Perhaps more than I need, but I've liked my Ultralite!) Have used the older models, serving the basic purpose of a through box via presets. MOTU seems to have issues keeping up with OS changes, so while current models may have computer connectivity, I don't know if that will remain true, so potentially becomes fairly limited.Ok scratch what I said about not needing to interface with the DAW.

It's not necessary, but I'm not one of those wanting to keep off the DAW and be fully OTB. I've had such a solid experience with my Ultralite that I have a lot of faith with MOTU paired with a Mac. It should be supported till about 2019-20. I'll be fine with that if my computer lasts that much longer. So far, it's working like it was new. Its the drivers/configuration software that seem to be the problem.

Anyway, glad its working for you - don't mean to sound argumentative either, just as this looked like it could turn into a fairly comprehensive 'reference' thread, thought the point was worth making. I really like the simplicity of the MAV-8 and MX-8, but I realized that my setup requires me to fire up my computer to get any sound from my audio interface. All my synths are plugged directly into it bypassing a hardware mixer. So to record anything, I simply can't bypass the DAW and lately I'm in a 'always be recording mode'. That said, a standalone unit is not must have. For this reason, and my experience with MOTU on a Mac, I'm leaning toward the MIDI Express 128. Wish it also had standalone non-USB mode too.
